Computer Requirements

« Skills You Need To Succeed

In an online and hybrid class most of your readings and assignments will be in PCC’s Learning Management System (LMS), CANVAS, so you need to make certain that you will have access to a computer and internet often enough to complete your course. (You’ll usually need to log in every day or two). If you don’t have a computer at home, you can use the ON-CAMPUS COMPUTER LABS.

Your computer should have some BASIC SOFTWARE and HARDWARE in order to use the LMS.

What software do I need to take an online course?

Computer

It is best to have a desktop/laptop computer (or other device — iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, smartphone) that is less than three years old and have one of the following operating systems:

  • Windows XP SP3 and newer
  • Mac OSX 10.6 and newer
  • Linux – chromeOS

Internet

A satellite, cable, or DSL connection is faster than dial-up service and will not cause you major stress while waiting for data and pages to load.

Web Browsers

Because it’s built using web standards, Canvas runs on Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, or any other device with a modern web browser.

Canvas supports the last two versions of every browser release. We highly recommend updating to the newest version of whatever browser you are using as well as the most up-to-date Flash plug-in.

Additional Plug-ins

For some courses, you may be required to have one or more plug-in application programs such as:

Generally, plug-in software is already present on your computer. Your instructor should give you the minimum plug in requirements for your class.

What hardware does my computer need to have?

This is a list of basic computer system requirements to use Canvas. It is always recommended to use the most up-to-date versions and better connections. Canvas will still run with the minimum specifications, but you may experience slower loading times. Click here to learn more about browser requirements.
